But as gently as they purr on the sofa, anatomically they\u2019ve remained true predators. In biology, cats are classified as obligate carnivores\u2014meaning strict meat-eaters. Their entire organism is uncompromisingly designed by nature to obtain nutrients from prey animals. But what does that mean for their daily bowl?    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A digestive system designed specifically for meat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between omnivores like dogs or humans and cats is clear as soon as you look in their mouths. Cats have a typical scissor bite with sharp canine teeth for gripping and tearing meat\u2014not for grinding plant fibers. In addition, a cat\u2019s saliva lacks the enzyme amylase, which would already start breaking down starch in the mouth.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gastrointestinal tract is also remarkably short. Because easily digestible animal protein is utilized quickly, the body doesn\u2019t need long intestinal loops like herbivores do to break down hard-to-digest fibers. Plant proteins and large amounts of carbohydrates put unnecessary strain on this short digestive tract and often lead to gastrointestinal issues or obesity.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The essential role of animal protein<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Animal protein provides essential amino acids that cats can\u2019t produce themselves. The best-known is taurine. While many mammals can synthesize taurine on their own, cats rely entirely on getting it through their diet. A taurine deficiency can lead to severe heart muscle disease or blindness.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to taurine, amino acids such as arginine and methionine, as well as preformed vitamin A, are vital for survival. Plant-based fats and oils can hardly be converted by a cat\u2019s body into the nutrients it needs. That\u2019s why only a meat-based diet with a very high proportion of animal protein fully meets their biological needs.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Real meat instead of cheap fillers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many commercial pet foods rely on plant protein concentrates or grains to artificially boost the declared protein content. But for a cat\u2019s metabolism, that number can be misleading: plant protein has a significantly lower biological value for velvet paws. When buying food, make sure animal protein plays the leading role and unnecessary fillers are avoided. A species-appropriate diet supports strong muscles, a stable immune system, and pure vitality well into old age.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions about \u201cCats &amp; Carnivores\u201d<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can cats be fed a vegetarian or vegan diet?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. A plant-based diet goes against a cat\u2019s nature and inevitably leads to dangerous deficiencies in vital nutrients such as taurine, vitamin A, and essential amino acids. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why do some cats tolerate plant proteins poorly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their short intestines and the lack of certain digestive enzymes make it extremely difficult for cats to break down plant cell structures and starch. This can lead to gas, soft stools, or intolerances. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How much meat should a good cat food contain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A high-quality food should consist almost entirely of fresh meat, organ meats, and animal protein sources.
